Explorer Camp | Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

The seasonal Sanbona Explorer Camp offers adventurous guests an authentic two-day walking safari experience to explore the dramatic landscapes of the Karoo on foot. Qualified guides assist to enrich your birding, cultural and natural history experiences whilst encountering the Big Five on foot. Three beautifully appointed canvas tents sleep two guests each and the Explorer Camp operates from October until the end of April.

Explorer Camp Rates, Terms & Conditions

Sanbona Explorer Camp is sold as a two-night walking trail package; therefore two (2) nights are automatically booked and payable at the time of reserving this unique experience.
The Explorer Camp operates during the summer months with the first trail in October and the last trail at the end of April.
Each trail is 2 nights with a set arrival of Friday of the week.
The walking trails are hosted and guided by an armed qualified walking guide.
Distances walked vary each day but can last up to 4 hours.
A game viewing vehicle remains in camp and will be utilised depending on where guests walk that day, the trail may start from camp or depart camp by vehicle to visit another area of the reserve.
We regret that no persons younger than 16 years will be able to participate.
Participants older than 60 years will be required to provide a medical clearance certificate in order to participate.
Please ask your reservations consultant for more information regarding a third night at any our five star, luxury lodges.

A typical Day at Explorer Overview

The following program is a guideline as all timings are subject to discussions upon arrival.

Day 1 – Arrival at Sanbona (Friday)

Day 2 – (Saturday)

Early wake up can be expected due to the nature of walking and temperatures during summer.
Enjoy muffins, fruit sticks, biscuits, tea and coffee in the lap of Mother Nature.
Morning walk commences and can last up to 4 hours, depending on temperatures.
Enjoy a hearty brunch upon return to camp.
Relax in your hammock, catch up on some rest, or simply adore the wild.
A variety of light sandwiches with fresh fruits will be enjoyed for lunch.
Afternoon hike.
Sundowner drinks are enjoyed in the bush, close to camp.
Enjoy dinner and an evening around the campfire.

A brief walk on morning of departure is optional.

Travelling to Sanbona

Transfers to Sanbona can be arranged with reservations on request at an additional cost. All transfers are handled by accredited car hire and charter companies and must be arranged prior to arrival.

Welcome Lodge

Explorer guests are met at the Welcome Lounge, 15km from the main gate and taken to the lodge in order to meet their specialist guide. A complimentary transfer from the lounge to the different lodges is available on request and must be booked at least 72 hours in advance.

There is also secure parking available for vehicles at the Welcoming Lounge for guests who travel to the reserve on their own.

What do You Need to Pack?

Clothing in neutral colours that is light in weight, but warm – Bright coloured clothing must be avoided as this can deter wildlife, you should include the following when packing your bag:
- 3 x Shirts
- 3 x Shorts
- 2 x pants (long)
- 1 x warm jersey or jacket as the evenings can get cold

A guided walking experience exploring the bush.

This seasonal camp offers adventurous guests an authentic walking experience to explore the Karoo while sleeping in luxury tents and enjoying evenings around a campfire. The camp is located along a beautifully shaded riverbed and qualified guides enhance birding, cultural and natural history experiences with opportunities to encounter the Big 5. The Explorer Camp operates during the summer months (October – April) and each wilderness trail takes two days to complete, with departures each Friday.

Regretfully, no persons younger than 16 years are able to participate in the wilderness trail walks. Restrictions apply to persons over 60 years, please contact us for the criteria.

Terms and conditions Cancellation Policy Directions By Car

All rates are quoted and invoiced in South African Rand (ZAR) on “per person per night” basis.

Conservation Levy:

A daily conservation levy of R175 per person per night will be applied to all reservations.
The conservation levy will be charged on the initial invoice to be settled at booking stage, alternatively settled directly by the guest on departure.
This levy is not included in the above-mentioned rates
The purpose of the guest conservation levy is to support the intense and ongoing conservation efforts on the reserve and provide support to local communities.

Adults travelling:

Adult Sharing rates apply to persons (16 years and older) sharing one tent.
Single Adult rates are only applicable when one adult is staying by him/herself in one tent.
Note that all tents can sleep a maximum of two adults.
Above mentioned rates are inclusive of all meals, beverages, walking activities, tourism levy and 15% Vat.
All rates are subject to change without prior notice.
A minimum stay of two nights (Friday and Saturday) must be booked per reservation.

Insurance

We highly recommend that comprehensive travel insurance is taken out, including cover against any COVID related incidences that may hinder future travel.

Special Catering/ Outsourced Meals

Please note that the outsourcing of any certified meals (i.e. Kosher or Halaal) will incur an additional surcharge per person per day.

Transfers / Gate Times

Transfers to and from the reserve can be arranged with reservations on request at an additional cost.
Terms and Conditions relating to Road transfers apply, and are available on request/as addendum to this document.
All transfers are handled by accredited car hire and charter companies.
A complimentary transfer from the welcoming lounge, located 15 kilometers into Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, is available and recommended for all guests to make use of when reserving the Explorer Experience. The following itinerary recommendation/ outline has been provided:

Day 1, day of arrival (Friday):

All guests arrive at the Sanbona Welcome Lounge by 12h00, transfer to a luxury lodge at 12h30
Meet your specialist guide who will host you for lunch at one of Sanbona’s luxury lodges
Transfer in an open game viewing vehicle to the Explorer Camp

Day 2 (Saturday)

Early rising can be expected due to the nature of walking and temperatures during summer
Enjoy muffins, fruit sticks, biscuits, tea and coffee amongst mother nature
Morning walk commences and can last up to 4 hours, depending on temperatures
Enjoy a hearty brunch upon return to camp
Relax in your hammock, catch up on some rest or simply adore the wild
A variety of light sandwiches with fresh fruits will be enjoyed for lunch
Afternoon hike
Sundowner drinks are enjoyed in the bush, close to camp
Enjoy dinner and an evening around the fire

Day 3, day of departure (Sunday):

Early rising can be expected due to temperatures during summer
Enjoy a breakfast in the bush before departing at 10h00 in order to meet up with the transfer from one of Sanbona’s luxury lodges to be back at the welcome lounge by 12h30
A brief walk on morning of departure is optional.

Provisional Reservations

Provisional bookings during festive season (15 December 2022/2023 – 03 January 2023/2024 (travelling dates)) will be held for a maximum of 24 hours.
Subject to availability; i.e.: should we have limited suites available, only confirmed bookings will be accepted.
Bookings made less than 30 days prior to arrival will be held for a maximum of 48 hours.
Bookings made 31 - 90 days prior to arrival will be held for a maximum of 7 consecutive days.
Bookings made more than 90 days prior to arrival will be held for a maximum of 14 consecutive days.
Should confirmation not be received by the given date, the booking will be automatically released and can only be reinstated subject to availability and on the basis that the booking is confirmed/guaranteed.
Full names of guests traveling will be required to convert the status from provisional to confirmed. Name changes are not permitted once reservations have been confirmed.

Payment

Balance will be required 60 days prior to arrival.
Sanbona Wildlife Reserve reserves the right to release bookings, should payment not be received by
the requested date.
Any discrepancies on the confirmation/pro forma invoice must be addressed at the time of booking, otherwise the invoice amount will be applied and will be due and payable regardless.
All bank charges are for the account of the tour operator and will not be paid by Sanbona Wildlife Reserve.

Cancellations

General

Only written cancellations will be accepted; please ensure you receive an acknowledgment of cancellation from reservations.
A fee of 50% of the booking value will be charged if cancellation is less than 60 days prior to arrival.
A fee of 100% of the booking value will be charged if cancellation is less than 30 days prior to arrival.
All reservations must be cancelled through/ via the original booking channel; failure to do so will result in full payment being required.

From Cape Town

Approximately 270 km from Cape Town.

Take the N1 highway in the direction of Paarl – There is a tollgate on this road, just before the Huguenot Tunnel.
Once through the tunnel, take the second turnoff to the right into Worcester (R60) – Follow the signs towards Robertson.
Drive through Robertson, still on the R60 into Ashton.
Proceed through Ashton – the R60 becomes the R62.
Carry on through Kogmanskloof and Montagu.
About 43km from Montagu, turn left at ‘Die Vlakte’ and Sanbona Wildlife Reserve sign.
Continue for 7km to reach the main entrance.
Proceed for another 15km to reach the Welcome Lounge.
Please be advised that the road changes from tar to gravel and the recommended speed limit from there until the Main Gate is 60 km/h. The main entrance to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is 7 km. Once through the Main Gate the speed limit is 40km/h.

From Oudtshoorn

Follow Route 62 for 175km via Calitzdorp and Ladismith, towards Barrydale.
From Barrydale, continue on Route 62 towards Montagu for approximately 22km.
Turn right at ‘Die Vlakte’ and Sanbona Wildlife Reserve signs.
Continue for 7km to reach the main entrance.
Proceed for another 15km to reach the Welcome Lounge.
